Party Philosophy

With another Birthday Party where my group of friends gathered and exchanged stories and libations I feel it’s time for a little review of why I organize these “parties” once a year. It has occurred to me during multiple points in my life that I would not be “here” if it weren’t for my friends and family. If it weren’t for the people who add Quality to my life I would end up sitting around in a monastery somewhere contemplating what a mountain would say to the hiker climbing it and vice versa.

The reason I organize these Birthday Parties is to get all the people who add Quality to my life together and let them just be together. This allows for all kinds of great story telling and good times to be had by all. Plus, I love to see all of my friends having a good time and being happy.

I’ve always taken a little pride in the company I keep and the people I continue to spend my time with. You have to try to find a person who is an asshole in my group of friends. I may know a few but they won’t ever make it into the inner circle.

If you can have one night a year when everyone can count on going out and having a good time then why not have a party? The problem comes in when there are outside influences that ruin the party and these are the things to be avoided at all costs. Normally these “outside influences” are random people you don’t know who don’t understand the group dynamic of your party and end up causing big issues. This can taint the idea of your Birthday party so it is always a good idea to have these parties when and where there is a very minimal chance for problems. Having a party Friday night in the middle of a “club” (I have to put that in comments because Phoenix doesn’t have any real clubs) where every drunk asshole is going to cause some form of issue. However Wednesday night at a hole in the wall bar near your house is an excellent idea.

So with that said I want to thank all the people who do add Quality to my life and who continue to keep me from becoming a monk sitting around thinking of what a Mountain has to say.

*rant*
Hiker: “Hello Mountain how goes it? I bet it is just nice to be and never have to do anything. My life is full of lists and lists of things I have to do constantly. Eat, Sleep, Breathe, work, pay bills, go to school, the list goes on and on.”

Mountain: “I bet it’s nice to do and not just be. I just sit here watching everything around me run through life doing all kinds of great things, while all I do is be.”

Ghetto Ass Birthday Party

23rd BDay at Sakana

It’s time for the summer extravaganza you are all waiting for… Dan’s 26th B-Day.
I debated breaking this tradition started way back when my parents went out of town for my 18th and then my 19th birthday, but my better judgment was restored.
This year will will be having a Ghetto Ass Birthday. That’s right, it’s not going to be at my Parent’s house, my Condo or out at a Sushi joint. This year it will be at the Tallyho Cocktails right behind my condo. Dinner will be served whenever the hell you want to eat at Los Favoritos, Scottsdale BBQ or Chizona’s, all are within stumbling distance from the gathering.

Wednesday the 25th from around 7:30 – 1ish. Let me know if you need any more details.

Tallyho Cocktails (CASH ONLY BAR) There is a WellsFargo and Chase ATM within walking distance but they become unavailable at 11.
8479 E Mcdonald Dr
Scottsdale, AZ 85250-6335

Please leave a comment to give me an idea of who all to expect, you know in case I need to put SWAT on notice.

I’ll be hanging out at the bar from around 6ish on as I’ll be meeting people from work at the bar.

Amsterdam in Detail

We arrived in Amsterdam at night as it was another 4-5 hour train ride. We managed to find our Hostel Bulldog Hostel by GPS. FYI, this was the nicest hostel we stayed in. After dropping off the goods we hit the Red Light District like any self respecting 20 something male would. Needless to say No Camera’s Allowed. If they catch you taking pictures in some of the places they just toss your camera in the canal. FYI there are more canals in Amsterdam then in Venice.

The next morning, I bet you can guess what we did, we did a city tour and wandered around getting all kind of information about Amsterdam. The tour was awesome we got all kinds of great history lessons but more importantly we saw a high cat. We also saw the East India Trading Company and found out that XXX was used to mean Amsterdam by sailors when filling out forms asking where they were going.

Needless to say we did our share of drinking and hanging out in Amsterdam. It is really a fun city if you like what Red Light Districts have to offer. With that said this was were my trip ended. I flew stand-by home and it took 26 hours. It was horrible. Never ever ever ever fly stand-by. If someone offers you standby just say, “Hell no”.

Berlin In Detail

We arrived at the Hauptbanhof around 5 in the afternoon. The Hauptbanhof is the central train station of Berlin and the most impressive I have seen. The German countryside is magnificent, I would highly recommend taking a driving tour of Germany should you ever be given the opportunity.

Once we got off the train we managed to find our hostel A&O Hostel City West, Berlin which was actually really nice. The trains outside got a little old but, you get over that.

Once we dropped off our bags we fell into our standard operating procedure, hit the streets, see some sites and drink some beers. I do want to say this, Berlin was horribly confusing for the first hour or so to me. #1 Because I was semi-sick #2 Because streets are crazy in Berlin.

The first thing we did however was find some bratwursts, which are being sold all over the place. We then wandered over to a bombed out church and the Victory Column, Bismarck’s memorial, the Brandenburg Gate and countless other sites. After enough walking we found beer and then wandered home fro some rest. Berlin Sites Pics

Day 2
We woke up for the City Tour which was amazing. If you are ever in Berlin you must take one day and do the city tour. It reveals so much about Berlin and World War 2 it is almost disgusting. Most people seem to forget that Berlin was almost completely destroyed in World War 2 and anything that wasn’t decimated then sure got ravaged in the Cold War. The whole city has been rebuilt in the last 50 years. Something else people don’t know is Berlin is a Slavic word for “Bog or Marsh” that’s right, the whole city is built on a marsh. Wonder where all that stone comes from for their buildings?

You should check out Hitler’s plans for Berlin. He was going to rename it “Germainia” in 1950 after he won World War 2.

After the city tour we checked out the Pergamon Museum where one of the original wonders of the ancient world resides. The Gates of Babylon or Gates of Ishtar also the Pergamon Alter is in the museum. It’s really a site to be seen and TOTALLY worth doing.

This picture doesn’t do it justice.

We then returned home and crashed out as we were leaving for Amsterdam the next afternoon we decided to do a Third Reich Tour then hop on the train for Amsterdam. The Third Reich Tour was awesome as we had the same tour guide “Andrew McKenzie”. This guy was great and he totally changed my perspective on World War 2.

Lessons I have learned:
Reserve train seats at least 3 days in advance.
No One-Day Stops to see a new city.
It’s best to do about 2 days of site seeing, 1-2 days of museums and whatever and 1-2 days of partying/relaxing for any major city that actually has some culture.
I get sick when I travel so I should bring good cold meds, German Apothecary’s Rock!

Prague in Detail

When we arrived in Prague it was night out and we were greeted by the Coronal. Apparently Bohemian’s love the crap out of him, well and his chicken. Yah that’s right the Czech Republic was part of Bohemia. I didn’t quite realize this until it was later.

Anyways we wandered around, found our apartment and a few beers then tried to get some night shots of the Prague Castle.Prague Apartment Pictures

The next morning we discovered that Bohemian’s love their rapeseed. Then we wandered up to go see the Prague Castle and St.Vitus Cathedral.

We got to the castle in time to see the changing of the guard. Then we grabbed a bunch of pictures, found some food then wandered down past a ton of shops across Charles Bridge down to the Astronomical Clock all the while being hounded by some drug dealer. He must have asked us 10 times if we wanted anything.

I did manage to find a little communist hat, some nice crystal jewelry for mom and Eric managed to break a bunch of crystal while being enamored by the crystal monkey.

Did I mention all of Prague’s metro stations are from the future?

We hit the clubs then planned on heading to Kutna Hora the next morning. We caught a train to Kutna Hora where we visited Kostince a 12th century church. The church has a whole bunch of columns a, chandelier, cross and some other stuff made after 40,000 people died of the plague. We also visited a magnificent church that had two saint’s preserved bodies from around the 14th Century. St. Felix and Some other saint were housed in Church of the Assumption of the, Virgin Klosterkirche Maria Himmelfahrt. Needless to say the countryside of rural Prague is anything but breathtaking.

When we got back we wandered around Prague some more and visited one of Neil’s favorite restaurant/bars called Hlucna Samota. After having a massive serving of protein we discovered that the day before we visited the place the New York Times had mentioned it as one of the best places to eat in Prague which was pretty sweet.

We all passed out and prepared for our 6 hour train ride to Berlin the next day.

The Balance to Life

All too often we seem to become addicted to something. We give it our complete undivided attention and turn a blind eye to all other things in life. When this happens we begin to become unbalanced. We begin to put more and more and more of ourselves into whatever we spend all our time on. This causes us to link our happiness to this single thing, to this one goal. We begin to miss out on other things in life or when other things in life take us away from our soul focus we begin to get depressed and angry. We lash out at all other aspects in life all because we have such an intense desire to do this one thing.

Though not all people do something. Some people do nothing, which has a similar consequence. Life is multifaceted, it has an infinite amount of ways to do anything you can imagine. Now I’m not talking about the human life. I’m talking about cosmic life, though a human life seems to exhibit many of the same qualities just on a much smaller time scale. Life is able to do so many things because it has a seemingly infinite amount of time. Odds are if we can imagine it somewhere in the universe it is occurring. I’m sure it sounds kind of crazy but who is going to say otherwise? Why can’t all of these things take place ? Though I’m definitely way off topic and beginning to ramble. The intention of this blog is to remind myself that I need to live a more balanced life. What I’m trying to do is remind myself of the definition of balance that I would like to keep through my end of days.

You see it is the rare occasion where I will sit down and watch a movie. Normally I am wrapped up spending my time reading, climbing, coding, playing games or out with friends. In recent years I have continued to branch out into various aspects of human life and try to appreciate them from many perspectives. I still think a different perspective is one of the most precious gifts another person can give. It provides a refreshment and an experience that is unrivaled in my opinion.

Going back to balance, armed with a variety of interests and a desire for new perspectives I find it is important to not get hung up on things as diligently as I once did. “Variety is the spice to life” and I find this to be true on a very regular basis. Lets say all I did was work and go to school, something I have done for about half of my 26 years in this body/mind. School being continuing on for a PhD in Computer Science say, I would probably be a very boring and maladjusted person. I find then when given enough time and focus I will devote myself totally and utterly to a single task and build a life around it. Fortunately, in recent date I have been able to create a different kind of life. I’ve been able to get out more and more and find things that I find increasingly entertaining and enlightening. There should be an emphasis on the word enlightening as I find that to be a source of entertainment, though entertainment is only a byproduct of enlightening experiences.

I suppose to attempt to quantify this, the Quality of experiences that I do find enlightening is much higher then experiences I find purely entertaining. I think this is the “rub” of the matter. Many people are satiated with simply entertaining. I learned at a younger age, if you want to call 15 a younger age, that enlightening experiences are infinitely more valuable and come with a momentum. An enlightening experience is less just some entertaining joke it is a movement of thought. It provides the mind/body/spirit a direction in which to explore something interesting. It is almost like something telling you that this is a must to experience and you should continue on the path that you have just stepped foot on. When life sees fit to bring you in contact with something wonderfully perspective changing and mind/body/spirit altering, it is important to explore it as much as possible. This way you can be sure you have experienced this “thing” to it’s fullest. You don’t stop eating a parfait after the first layer of ice cream and I think that is what people who just seek entertainment do. They enjoy the first layer and move on skipping the various fillings and other layers.

And maybe that is what I mean by “Balance” simultaneously enjoying multiple “life parfaits” to their fullest.

Dublin In Detail

We arrived at the airport as planned around 5:30am and was unable to get onto 3 flights because they were all overbooked by US Airways. Mind you, we were flying Stand By trying to get to Philadelphia to try and catch a late night flight to Dublin. After speaking to Customer Service we found out that we probably wouldn’t be able to catch a flight until Monday Or Tuesday. As you can imagine I was very excited and by excited, I mean, I wanted to shit on something held very dear to the person who decided overselling every flight was a good idea. With that said we decided to just buy one way tickets to Dublin, which after 20 minutes of looking, we found tickets at Continental departing in two hours. After getting over to the terminal we were greeted by Chip and Jody. Chip is one of my bosses who lives in Denver and Jody is a co-worker who lives in Iowa. After relaying our grief to them a man overheard our conversation and began expounding on how great Prague was and setting a rather pleasant scene for how great Europe is. Apparently this guy had been all over the world for his company and was more then happy to lay out any Idiosyncrasies of a culture. ( “I didn’t find any flaws in what he had to say but I didn’t find anything he was saying to be very self evident. Then again this guy got to live in these countries for a few weeks at a time and we were pretty much sprinting through them”) I had been up for 26 hours so I slept pretty much the entire flight to Europe.

When we landed I was pretty excited. The trip through customs was a breeze and the weather was sunny with a bit of a chill. Once we had purchased our bus pass we hoped on a bus and began our trek to the Hostel. We had some basic directions that were printed out but I wasn’t quite prepared for just how crazy European streets are. Phoenix was built off of a grid structure so it is really easy to get from A to B just by knowing street names since it is rather rare that a street will change names. In Europe it seems streets change magically and at a whim as they whip around and intermingle with one another. Thankfully James had a sweet GPS unit he had won the day before at a work event. This brought us to the Hostel with a minimal amount of wandering.

More Brewery Hostel Pics

Once we arrived at the “Brewery Hostel”, which was about a 5 minute walk from the Guinness Brewery, we drop our stuff off, pick up a free map and proceeded to wander around Dublin. The first impression of the city was amazement as I never really see cathedrals or castles or city walls that were constructed around the 12th century. Now after having been there I realize Dublin is very similar to many metropolitan US cities, the exception is it has history. Now we arrived on a Sunday, which seems to imply most things are closed or have very limited hours. Most of the pubs weren’t open when we arrived so we checked the map and decided to hit up the “Jameson Distillery”.

The Jameson Distillery was awesome to say the least. It is a tour that covers whiskey 101, Jameson family history and how Jameson whiskey is different from the many whiskeys of the world. It seems the major factors are they use a smokeless coal when heating their malts which prevents a smoky flavor in the whiskey. They use a triple distillation method to create the whiskey then the have very special casks that they use to age the whiskey. It seems the casks are used to make various kinds of flavored liquors which take somewhere around 2-3 years to created. During this time period the cask soaks up the flavor of the liquor. These casks are then shipped to the Jameson plant and used to age their whiskey. As you can imagine the whiskey begins to take on many of the flavors of the liquor that was previously in the cask. This is what helps give Jameson some of it’s flavor. I know this sounds like a sales pitch but I found it interesting and highly recommend the tour to everyone. A word of advice, when the tour guide asks for volunteers , Be one of those volunteers. You get a big whiskey taste test at the end of the tour and it is very much worth it.

After having a few drinks we continued our travels to the Dublin City walls which I tried to climb. Needless to say the walls were a little slick and I ended up cutting my head on one of the stones. I still think I could climb them with a little chalk and some climbing shoes. We then wandered into the Dublin Castle which was rather uninspiring as it seemed to have been rebuilt around the 1600’s. The Crown Regalia were stolen from Dublin castle and no one knows where the went.
Dublin Castle Pics

After walking around all afternoon we went back to the hostel and met our hostel mate. It was this German chick who wasn’t doing much so we picked her up and wandered over to the local Pub “Ryan’s Pub” and proceeded to have a very entertaining time. As soon as we sit down in the pub an old women whose cheeks are red with drunk points me out and asks “Are you a Pollack?” To which I replied, “No”. She then quickly followed with “Are you in the KKK?” I have to admit, this one threw me for a curve at first. I wasn’t quite sure what the hell this old lady was getting at, then I realized I was wearing a hoodie and this might be some kind of crazy cultural deal. So I threw my hood up and gave her the stink eye. This put me on the receiving in of a sign of the cross from this little lady who then toasted me. We ended up hanging around for quite awhile. We discovered there is quite an active lesbian community that shows up around 8-9 and that everyone in the bar is all too familiar with music from the 1950-70’s that came out of America. In fact I found it quite scary.

Dublin Random Pics

After having our fair share of drinks and sing-alongs we departed the bar in search of sleep. I however was not quite prepared for sleep so I wandered into the common area where a few people were watching a DVD of outtakes from “Cradle of Filth”. Apparently this is a “Dark Metal” band that is kind of big. I had the privilege of having a few people explain to me the differences between “Dark Metal” and “Death Metal” but I couldn’t tell you what they were now if I had to. I ended up watching the DVD for over an hour with a rather diverse group. Some people from Scandinavia, Germany, Ireland and god know where else. Needless to say the DVD was not entertaining enough so it quickly became a Mystery Science Theater 3000 Multi-Cultural edition. I must say I have not laughed that hard in a very long time.

The next morning Neil, James and I decided to take the city tour on the “Hop On, Hop Off” which is a double decker bus where the driver fills you in on all the history of city sites. It just so happens that James had a friend who was in Dublin the same time we were and wouldn’t you know it but he and his posse just happen to be on the same bus tour. So we joined forces with them (Joe, Bobby, Nikki, Josh (Maverick), Debbie ) and proceeded to do the rest of our site seeing and go drinking later that night with them. We also managed to meet up with John, Eric and Will. After a day of visiting Dublin sites and drinking in the Temple Bar district we hit the hay.

Lessons Learned:
Never fly stand-by, ever. Should you consider it, inform me and I will kick you in the nuts. It will be less painful, trust me.
Bring Cold meds. Weather changes are drastic and often result in a wonderful cold. Something I tend to forget. It’s a great idea to bring your favorite high powered cold meds so your trip isn’t miserable.
Beanies, hoodies, thick socks and rain slicks. These 4 things will make your trip MUCH less painful. At least it did for me, though I really wished I had a beanie.
Hostel beds are going to suck, and their pillows and sheets won’t be much better. Just be prepared.
Ear plugs. Great for the flight and when you have fat snoring neighbors, people trying to get it on, or loud drunks at the hostel.
